There is no question that China is in the news today, incessantly, it seems. Every day, each portion of the Western media contains reports about something to do with China – the economy, the currency, relations with the US, trade figures, pollution, progress.

 

But in the Western media, especially but not exclusively in the English-speaking countries, we seem to have instinctively negative reporting. The majority of that emanates from the Jewish-owned (and some other strongly right-wing media), reflecting their determination to slander China in a “hate campaign” that has now been progressing for years, in attempts to turn the world against the “Axis of Evil” nations that include Russia, Iran, Venezuela, North Korea and others. Journalists have freely admitted that writing articles of praise or admiration of China would be “career-ending.”

I began one section on colonisation by describing Iraq as a cradle of civilisation. One result of that long history is the existence of archaeological artifacts, art treasures, scrolls and other items accumulated over the course of centuries, many of great financial value but also of immense historical significance. Most have disappeared. American troops looted most of the country, with many Iraqi museums today being completely empty. Valuables and historical artifacts were stolen not only from museums and libraries, but also from private homes. Iraq was looted in totality. Published estimates claimed that during combat actions at least 200,000 items of art and culture, many of which were of inestimable value to the history of the world, were stolen from Iraqi museums in Baghdad, Mosul, and other cities. The US government claims these were only a few rogue actions of which it disapproved, but the facts tell us otherwise, and indeed many of these items have appeared in museums and private collections – in Israel, among other places.

21世紀のメディアに囲まれて毎日を過ごすわれわれ現代人は、好むと好まざるとにかかわらず、さまざまな情報に翻弄され、騙され、誤導され、あるいは、洗脳されて生きている。しかしながら、洗脳されているというはっきりした自覚はない。しかも、まったくのでっち上げであることも決して少なくはないのである。そんな印象をお持ちの人は決して少なくはないのではないか？

2001年に起こった9/11同時多発テロ事件については、20年も経過した今でさえも、世界貿易センタービルが崩落した原因がいったい何であったのかが究明されてはおらず、ひとつのでっち上げられた筋書きだけが公に独り歩きし、そのまま放置されている。あの事件以降、こういったでっち上げ事件が頻繁に起こっているように思えて仕方がない。例を挙げると、シリアにおける政府軍による化学兵器の使用、ウクライナでのマイダン革命、マレーシア航空MＨ－17便撃墜事件、米大統領選における選挙不正とロシアゲート、スクリッパル父娘毒殺未遂事件、ナヴァルニー毒殺未遂事件、等々。それとも、こういったでっち上げ事件の出現頻度は以前とはそれ程変わってはいないけれども、9/11事件以降、われわれ一般大衆は学習効果によって世間の出来事の背景にある本当の姿を以前よりも正確に見通すことができるようになったということであろうか？まだその正体がはっきりとは見えないにしても、新型コロナウィルスの大流行さえもが同じ範疇に入りそうな気がしてならない昨今である。

ここに「プロパガンダとメディア　―　さあ何か嘘を報じようではないか　―　第5編」と題された記事がある（注1）。この表題は西側の大手メディアの所有者あるいは編集者の言葉として何処でも、そして、何時でも聞こえて来そうな感じがする。幸か不幸か、歪曲された情報が溢れている現在のメディアの姿を上手に描写しているように思う。

本日はこの記事を仮訳して、読者の皆さんと共有しようと思う。

I stated in earlier articles that we are subjected - more often than we might imagine - to news articles that were entirely fictitious, reporting on news events that either never occurred, or where the description bore no resemblance to the actual event.

One of the most common ploys is to fabricate an event - usually an atrocity tale of some nature - and use an unrelated and misleading photo as evidence. CNN is famous for this tactic and, when challenged, invariably offers one of two responses: (a) 'Okay, so we accidentally mis-captioned a photo. Big deal.", or (b) "It doesn't matter. The photo was editorially relevant." These are not accidental; they serve as vital evidence for the fabricated story, and depend immensely on the ignorance of Americans and Westerners generally.

In most nations, when a particular criminal conduct reaches epidemic proportion, the government finally acts decisively to eradicate it. Not in America; they solve the problem by legalising it. They did this with influence-peddling (lobbying) and drugs, the same now occurring with domestic propaganda which has been against the law for a very long time to protect citizens from psychological manipulation and control by their own government. The law has always been ignored, but Congress is now dispensing with the pretense in repealing two major laws, the 1948 Smith-Mundt Act (1) (2) (3) (4) and the 1987 Foreign Relations Authorization Act, so as to permit the authorities to disperse false and misleading propaganda and campaigns of misinformation against its own people. Of course, the government has always done this surreptitiously, sometimes to an overwhelming extent as in the case of war marketing, but it has always been illegal. After this, it won't be. One Pentagon official claimed this new provision will have "No checks and balances. No one will know if the information is accurate, partially accurate, or entirely false". In an article in USA Today, it was quoted that the US military (Pentagon) already spends about $4 billion per year on propaganda to sway public opinion, much of that directed domestically. (5) (6) (7)
